Protecting the Shell of Your Car

The bodies of many automobiles from the 1960s to the 1980s were made out of sheet metal rather than today's lighter and newer composites and alloys. Most owners of these cars want to preserve the original material rather than replace it with a modern counterpart. If you have recently installed fabricated sheet metal parts such as a roof panel or air spoiler during your car restoration or repair project, protect them against rust and decay.

First, cover the bare sheet metal with a light coating of putty. When the putty is completely dry, sand it smooth. Not only does the material fill up minute holes that will show themselves after the final coat of paint, but it also acts as a tough barrier against moisture. Wash the residue and dust away after sanding.

Next, apply a primer for overall rust protection. The primer usually has a microscopically rough finish which makes it a sturdy substrate for the next coat of sealant and paints. Next, apply a protective seal coating that is especially made for the metal used on your car's body, usually a form of galvanised steel. If you can afford it, use a gloss. This makes the final coat of paint smooth and glossy. In addition, the coating creates a very shiny and slippery surface that does not allow water to bead. Apply the coating according to the manufacturer's instructions.

When the sealant dries, spray the paint with a shade that matches the car's colour or your preference. Two or three coats of paint are usually needed to obtain the effect you want. Make sure the previous coat is dry before you apply the next one.
