Preparing for a Bike Tour

Do you want to explore your country the adventure-filled, healthy, and affordable way? Then travel across the region by bicycle. Touring by bicycle is one of the most common forms of recreational biking with a high level of participation. Since you will be riding your bike for maybe weeks at a time, you need to thoroughly prepare yourself and your vehicle.

First, give your bicycle a complete checkup. Everything from the handle bars to the wheels must be in good condition. Replace worn-down or broken parts with new ones. If your bike is brand new, break it in by using it for a week or two around your neighbourhood.

Next, you need to visit the gym and build up your endurance and your lower body strength. Remember that bike touring requires a certain level of endurance because you will be exposed to harsh natural elements, traverse various inclinations in the terrain, and camp out at night in addition to pedalling your bicycle.

Next, ensure that you have the necessary equipment. The amount of gear you carry depends on the type of tour you are taking. For instance, for light touring, you may just carry a few clothes, a mobile phone, and a credit card, then stay in motels or buy food in cafés. But if you are planning a fully-loaded tour or expedition, you have to carry cross-country equipment such as camping gear, navigation systems, set of clothes, tools, spare parts for the bike, and cooking supplies. Place these in specially made pannier bags. Finally, whatever the type of bicycle tour you are in, bring your sunscreen, sunglasses, maps, water bottle, and other frequently-used essential items.
